This site is compiled

The page you are reading was produced by WordPress 7.1: its theme templates, its block renderer, its query, its REST API behind the editor that wrote this post. None of it ran on PHP. The WordPress sources were compiled to JavaScript by Loxodon, and a Cloudflare Durable Object runs that JavaScript, with its own SQLite as the database.

Nothing was changed in WordPress to make that possible. The compiler takes the files as they are, including the SQLite integration plugin WordPress itself maintains. When a request arrives, the runtime starts a fresh World, exactly as PHP-FPM starts each request from scratch, runs index.php, and returns the response.

If you want to see the same thing happen inside your own browser, the playground runs this very WordPress in a Web Worker, with SQLite compiled to WebAssembly and no server involved after the first download.
